My Career

I’ve been working with Microsoft SQL Server since November 2008. I have a passion for making SQL Server run as efficiently and as smoothly as possible, and try to achieve that by spending a great deal of time studying the technology and applying what I learn in real life scenarios. I’m an MCITP Database Developer 2008, and am currently working on becoming an MCITP Database Administrator 2008 too. My ultimate goal, certification wise, is to become a SQL Server Microsoft Certified Master (MCM).

Work Experience

Data Analyst – One2create – www.one2create.co.uk
November 2008 – Present

I started working here as one half of a two man help desk team, supporting bespoke extranets and the databases behind those extranets. I worked hard on the help desk, and when an opening in the reporting team became available in August 2010, I was promoted to Data Analyst!

My new role had me writing some way cooler SQL, and working with some other technologies I’d never used before. We utilized SSRS in conjunction with a SharePoint site, where users could run and download their reports as they pleased. SSIS was used heavily to pull data from our clients legacy systems for storage in SQL Server during a nightly load process. To further increase reporting efficiency, more complex ETL producers were written to pull data from multiple servers, perform data cleansing and aggregation, and to then load that data into a table for users to perform simple SELECT’s against. We also managed all of the database backups, indexing and performance, database design, and the mentoring of users in SQL Server best practices.

2nd Line Service Desk Agent – Cobweb Solutions – www.cobweb.com
July 2007 – November 2008

Cobweb Solutions primarily provide a hosted Microsoft Exchange platform to customers all over the world. Their customers range from single users requiring a single POP3 mailbox, to multimillion pound multinational corporations requiring thousands of exchange mailboxes.

It was my job to provide technical support to those customers for their hosted exchange solution, and all of the other services Cobweb supplied, including; Web Hosting, ADSL Connectivity and Hardware, Blackberry Enterprise Services (BES), Windows SharePoint, Active Directory (AD), and DNS. Another important part of my role was to educate users on how to use the “Control Panel”, which was a custom built web application allowing users to manage their companies services.
